Security is the first reason. If you exchange any information on your web site, whether that's a shopping web site where you are taking payments online or if it's a form on your web site where people fill in their details, they are potentially at risk from man in the middle attacks.
An SSL certificate ensures that the session between your web site and your visitors is encrypted and the information sent or received is safe in transit.
The second reason is your search engine position and how visitiors view your web site. Increasingly web browsers are displaying warnings about visiting insecure web sites. These warnings will become more and more prominent soon as Google has promised to favour web sites that have SSL installed and says it will make it's warnings more prominent.
The third reason is trust. In a world where cybercrime is prominent establishing trust between you and your potential clients is harder to achieve. A valid commercial SSL certificate and where possible a site seal tells your web site visitors that you are who you say you are and that their visit is safe. An SSL certificat then is an absolute must.
You probably have questions but here are the answers to a few of the ones we hear most.
If you don't see the answer, please ask - we're happy to help.
it's true, there are free SSL certificates available and infact we have hosting plans that include free Let's Encrypt certificates for example, however these are what's called basic domain validated.
What that means is that the fact that you have a web site is enough to issue the certificate.
There is no actual validation of you as a business or entity to determine whether or not you are who you say you are and so the level of trust established is low.
The certificate will ensure that traffic between your web site and your visitor is encrypted however there is no guarantee that your web site can be trusted.
This is why commercial certificates employ more involved domain validation, Organisational Validation (OV) and Extended Validation (EV), noted by the green bar that you see on most commercial web sites, including this one.
The green bar is displayed in the address bar on web sites which have undergone a process of Extended Validation (EV)as part of their SSL application process.
During the application process the organisation applying for the certificate has to positively prove that they are who they say they are. Documentation has to be provided to the certifying authority who will validate it's authenticity. They will also perform other checks, before issuing the certificate.
An EV certificate then shows to the web site browser that the web site is genuine and that they are who they say they are.
The certificate authority also offers a financial warranty should it laster transpire that they were not and that they failed in their validation process, often running to over a million dollars.
You might think that all certificates are the same, and while mechanically most are, however they are issued for different purposes and with differnt levels of warrantee and features and so are at different prices.
Rapid SSL for example, are all about speed of issue and is domain validated but offers a very small financial warranty regarding it's validation process, where as Geotrust, Symantec and others offer domain validated certificates with higher levels of warranty, site seals, and go futher with organisation and exended validation processes.
They also offer certificates that can be used to sign code and which can also be used for multiple subdomains or domains.
We do offer certificates that can be used for muliple subdomains or SANs - Subject Name Alternatives.
With these types of certificates you could secure noth jsut your main www.yourdomain.com address but also portal.yourdomain.com and shop.youdomain.com with the same certificate.
Some certificates include 3 to 25 subdomains as standard, and cal be expanded to include 100 or more.
This depends on the type of certificate and validation.
A DV or domain validated certificate can be issued in minutes, while an EV certificate may take a week due to the checks that need to bee performed.
